Big Cheese: Nirvana’s Debut LP, Bleach, Turns 20!
Wednesday, November 4th, 2009Another week, another deluxe reissue to purchase…
Behold Nirvana’s mighty, speaker-shattering debut, Bleach, which celebrates its 20th birthday this week. To mark the momentous anniversary, the trio’s original record label, Sub Pop, is turning out a deluxe, remastered edition of said album (recorded at the time, as rock lore would have it, for a meager $600). It will come complete with a gallery of previously unreleased archival photos AND an incredible live set from a 1990 performance at the now-defunct Pine Street Theater (formerly located right here in Portland, Oregon). Even better, the vinyl edition is pressed on white wax — as it was with the original — and comes with a coupon that can be redeemed for downloadable mp3’s for all songs.
All the official deets.
My favorite track from this record is and always will be the primordial “School,” a potent blend of power, volume and distortion. From the period:
And a shocking design from my youth, for the tee bloggers:

This New Jay Reatard Video Makes Me Laugh Uncontrollably…
Thursday, August 6th, 2009The new clip from Matador Recording Artist Jay Reatard, the punkish, garage rocker-du jour, is my nominee for video (and album) of the year. It kinda riffs on the infamous birthday party sequence in Old School, but any similarities may be purely coincidental. As it is, insouciant clowns at pool parties are hilarious to no end. Enjoy!

Kool Thing: Thurston Moore is DJing My Birthday Party (Kinda)!
Monday, July 20th, 2009One of Portland’s best music boutiques, Jackpot Records, has just announced that Thurston Moore will spin a DJ set at their downtown location (203 SW 9th Ave.) on July 28th (that’s my birthday, yo!) starting at 3PM. For FREE! Moore, of course, is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and visionary for famed NYC-based artists-cum-noisemongers-cum-tastemakers, Sonic Youth.

According to an e-flyer I received last week, his set will consist entirely of LPs — both new and used, one hopes — found on-site at JPot. Given Moore’s prolific interests and presumably wide-ranging listening habits, one can only imagine what might emerge from the speakers…
As it is, Moore and company are touring the States in support of album #16, entitled The Eternal, which was released in June. They’ll be playing later that night at Roseland Theater, a venue I’m not particularly fond of (poor layout, beefy security guards, attitude, etc.).
In any case, to mark the occasion, here are five of my favorite Sonic Youth t-shirts, a mix drawn from the past and present.
1. An homage to their back catalog. I really dig the way the band’s name has been shoehorned into the outline of sunglasses. Available at the band’s online store.
