Trailer vs. Trailer Smackdown
The newest Bond flick, the awkwardly-titled Quantum of Solace, opened this past weekend. The box office receipts were, as expected, quite spectacular, despite reviews that have been muted, even tepid, thus far. I thought the plot and the pacing were misaligned and in need of one more edit, but the acting was intense, especially Daniel Craig’s full-metal-jacketed performance, and the visual elements were executed at a highly proficient level — at the very least, the film functions as a sleek piece of eye-candy, punctuated with the requisite babes, toys and weapons.
In any case, the movie was preceded by a pair of trailers for high-profile and greatly anticipated 2009 releases: The Watchmen (which I’ve discussed in this space before) and the Star Trek reboot (overhauled by J.J. Abrams, he of Lost and Cloverfield repute). Both of these properties figure to draw huge audiences next summer, even if they are captive to the sky-high expectations of their fan-boy fanatics. Neither disappoint here in capsule form, but one wonders: can these hold up? Will they deliver, as expected? Time will tell.
Naturally, I’m wondering how others feel. Which movie are you looking towards more? Also, which trailer excited you more? Below, I’ve embedded both vids.
