The 5 Most Anticipated Popcorn Movies of 2009 (As Determined by Me)

It goes without saying that we’re big movie fans here at It Goes to 11. We may not be pure cinephiles, current say with every release and trend emerging from obscure film communities around the globe, but we are highly interested in and inspired by the moving picture medium nonetheless. And those tee shirts…

In any case, 2009 promises a slate of exciting films; to this end, I have compiled a list of the 5 flicks I’m most interested in actually viewing at a real live movie theater. Note to readers: this index skews completely towards big budget, action-adventure and sci-fi releases with eye-popping effects, which as we all know are the best kinds of films to begin with. You have been duly warned; this is a list for nerdy fanboys everywhere.

1. Watchmen

Is there really any doubt now about this project? The trailers have promised a rich and complex treatment of a revered comic book franchise, and I think director Zach Synder and his crack team are going to deliver in spades.

2. Terminator: Salvation

The news of a rebooted Terminator trilogy provoked a degree of anxious hand-wrangling at the time, but the film’s chief handler, the love-him-or-hate-him Mc G, has built credible buzz with early footage that has exceeded all realistic expectations. Killer robots? Check. Huge explosions and chase sequences? Check. The mechanized apocalypse we’ve only seen in bits to date? Check. Arnold? We’ll see…

3. Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen

The first installment was a bit too cutesy for my taste, but the trailer that aired during the recent Super Bowl points towards a much darker and more sinister sequel. Consider my interest to have been officially piqued.

4. Star Trek

The dark horse on our list. I liked the old Trek, sure, but I am far, far, far from an official, card-carrying Trekkie. That said, the early coming attractions for this one suggest a more gripping, serious and conflicted tone than previous incarnations, with dazzling visual effects to match. May the force be with you…

5. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Some fans were let down by the third and penultimate chapter in the X-Men saga, but yours truly was not amongst them. Comic book fans have been waiting years for this film and I can’t imagine any scenario that would keep me away.

Tell me: what movies are you looking towards seeing in 2009? travis@founditemclothing.com
