A Just Question, If Only There Was a Question Mark.

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Found Item Clothing (.com) continues to churn ‘em out. Behold our newest tee, Who Write This Stuff.

You might recognize this design from Funny People, a new comedy from Judd Apatow starring Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, and Jonah Hill (among many, many other, yes, hilarious peeps). The movie opens later this week (how’s that for a fast turnaround?), but you can watch the trailer below…

For the record, this is the second FIC tee to seemingly omit the proper punctuation. As with our notorious What Are You Looking At Dicknose shirt, “the conspicuous lack of a question mark is a syntactic mystery that reverberates through [the] mind like a Zen koan.” Or so it would seem.

Pick one up today for $21.95!

Kool Thing: Thurston Moore is DJing My Birthday Party (Kinda)!

Monday, July 20th, 2009

One of Portland’s best music boutiques, Jackpot Records, has just announced that Thurston Moore will spin a DJ set at their downtown location (203 SW 9th Ave.) on July 28th (that’s my birthday, yo!) starting at 3PM. For FREE! Moore, of course, is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and visionary for famed NYC-based artists-cum-noisemongers-cum-tastemakers, Sonic Youth.

According to an e-flyer I received last week, his set will consist entirely of LPs — both new and used, one hopes — found on-site at JPot. Given Moore’s prolific interests and presumably wide-ranging listening habits, one can only imagine what might emerge from the speakers…

As it is, Moore and company are touring the States in support of album #16, entitled The Eternal, which was released in June. They’ll be playing later that night at Roseland Theater, a venue I’m not particularly fond of (poor layout, beefy security guards, attitude, etc.).

In any case, to mark the occasion, here are five of my favorite Sonic Youth t-shirts, a mix drawn from the past and present.

1. An homage to their back catalog. I really dig the way the band’s name has been shoehorned into the outline of sunglasses. Available at the band’s online store.

Space is the Place: Look at This Massive Compilation of Star Wars Shirts!

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Earlier this month, I wrote about a giant list of tee shirt lists over at Hide Your Arms (one of our favorite tee blogs). Truly, it was a Herculean effort, but it seems that Andy, the site’s writer and founder, has managed to outdo even himself less than a week later. To wit, take a look at this huge compilation of Star Wars tees, some 202 in all.

Designs include everything from licensed shirts to clever spoofs; truly, there’s something for everyone.

I’m kinda partial to this mug shot:

Fixed Gears Are the New Roller Blades: Urban Outfitters Sells Bikes?!? WTF!?!

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Further proof that fixies have definitely achieved cultural saturation (i.e., click on me):

Disclaimers: I like bikes; I shop at UO on occasion; I have no problem with Republic Bicycles, Urban’s partner in this project.

What I don’t like: the easy commodification of an imagined aesthetic that’s more flash than substance.

Kvetching to commence in 3, 2, 1…

Block Party: Seven Puzzling Rubix Cube-Themed Tee Shirts

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Much as with movies, television programs and video games of the era, popular toys from the 80’s are providing today’s t-shirt designers (and moviemakers) with fodder for the creative process. In particular, the Rubik Cube — which has sold more than 350 million units since its creation by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Emo Rubik in 1974, making it the top-selling puzzle time-suck of all time — has emerged as a go-to motif for numerous graphic artists of a geeky or obsessive bent. Below, I’ve compiled a list of 5 7 smart shirts that feature or riff on the venerable 80’s icon in one fashion or another.
