Killer Robots, Alien Cyclists and Computer Hacks

New at Chop Shop this week is an interesting design, 80’s Filmography, so titled because it distills 22 classic films from that decade into simple icons, all of which are arranged in — get this — a figure 8 (how apropos).

I’m struck by the clean lines, the understated color combos and the sparing use of text, all of which recall the safety inserts you might typically find on an airplane (a design quality that most of Chop Shop’s tees share…). The majority of images here are fairly self-evident (E.T., The Terminator, Goonies, et. al.), but a few continue to elude my immediate recognition. Which begs my next question: how many of these badges can you identify? Conversely, which ones give you trouble?

There’s Yet One More New List…

Monday, June 14th, 2010

…via the hardest working man in the t-shirt industry, Andy from Hide Your Arms. To wit, his new site (launched just last week), shirtstor.es, which ranks assorted tee cos. (209 and counting…) by popular vote. I’d like to think that some people are gaming the system here just a bit — democracy can be such a fickle concept and anonymous critics can be oh so harsh — but I trust that the system will improve over time.

Found Item is currently languishing near the bottom of said index and could benefit from a little push. Feel free to lend us a vote if you’re so inclined..

Vaguely topical in a self-promoting kind of way (although his is probably ironic and ours is genuine):

Lisztomania: Say Hello to T-ShirtBlo.gs

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Another week, another online resource for the t-shirt community…

Building on his previous Herculean list-building exercises, Andy from Hide Your Arms has launched a new project, T-Shirtblo.gs, that ranks all of the web’s assorted t-shirt-related blogs (an astounding 159… and counting). At present, the index is determined by popular vote, but more fields and features, especially those of the search variety, will be forthcoming shortly (this, according to the site’s About page).

Naturally, we would love it if you could lend It Goes to 11 your support (hint: we are presently situated at #21). Nor should you forget about one of our affiliates, Failshirt, which is lurking at #58.

Crowdsourcing FTW!

Bon Appetit: Fashion Gives Me a Stomach Ache

Author’s note: this piece originally ran over at Failshirt, home of the world’s worst tees.

Another week, another controversial tee shirt from UO. To wit:

I’m not entirely convinced that this is a genuine Fail Shirt of the most egregious order, but the confluence of anorexia, the hot-button aesthetics of body image and the burgeoning media brouhaha push it over the top (and into our column). One wonders how this design would have been received if the model wasn’t so… waif-ish? Or underaged? Or, most importantly, female? (Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point and its passages on the Power of Context seem particularly apropos right about now.)

More opinion from a self-righteous, self-inflated arbiter of good (and bad) taste (pun most certainly fucking intended):
