The Great Escape: Bird Steals the Ball

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010At every level of youth ice hockey, I was taught two essential lessons about the game: (1) keep your head up (always); (2) keeps two hands on your stick (always). The clip embedded below, which was cribbed from a playoff tilt earlier in the week, illustrates the perils of neglecting such wisdom…

Teeing Off: Holocene’s 5th Annual Mini-Golf Invitational
Tuesday, April 13th, 2010Golf? Uh, sure. On occasion. Maybe if it’s in hi-def. Or Caddyshack.
Minigolf, you say? Now you’re talking my language…
To this end, I’m really excited about the following event, which is fast becoming a Portland tradition:
The concept is simple: Holocene, an art space-cum-live music venue, invites a who’s who of local creatives to design and construct a hole of their own (13 in total, I believe), loosely organized around a shared concept (this year’s motif: Zukünftspielplatz, or Kraut for future playground). Cool bands and DJs provide the soundtrack, while Holocene’s excellent barkeeps turn out cold drinks. Fun is had, and hilarity ensues. Hi-jinxs Hi-Links (get it?) FTW!

Golf garb is highly encouraged, and apparently, rewarded.

Sunday Bloody Sunday: Paris-Roubaix, Eddy Merckx and 5 Topical Tees
Friday, April 9th, 2010Sunday will bring the 108th edition of Paris-Roubaix, a grueling one-day road race that attracts an elite field composed of the world’s top professional cyclists.
As its moniker suggests, the race begins in Paris and winds its way northeast through peasant farm country, concluding — after 261 kilometers (roughly 162 miles) — with a climactic lap around the Roubaix Velodrome. Renowned for what are typically less-than-stellar conditions (rain, mud, wind, etc.) and extended brutal, punishing stretches of unforgiving cobblestone — dating to the ancien régime — that lead to some spectacular wrecks, the competition is, to invoke a cliche, a true war of attrition that tests one’s stamina, both physical and mental. Victors, not surprisingly, then, acquire great prestige and the respect of their peers.
Because one-day events are so much more unpredictable than long-form competitions that emphasize teamwork and strategy, dark horse candidates have emerged in years past as unlikely winners. But it’s also been a platform for superstars to author their legacy. Take, for example, the Belgian Eddy Merckx (a.k.a. the Cannibal). Widely considered to be the greatest and most decorated cyclist of all time, he took first in Paris-Roubaix three times: 1968, 1970 and again in 1973.
Who will win this year you, ask? As always, it’s something of a crapshoot, but this guy has to be considered one of the favorite, as would a local boy. Tune in this Sunday to Versus for all the Sunday bloody Sunday action! 6pm EST and 3pm PST, respectively!
In honor then of Merckx, Paris-Roubaix and the reflected glory of future champions, here are five topical tee shirt designs (arranged, I should add, in no particular order). One final note: click on the pics to link through…
1. From the friendly peeps at No Star comes this racing relief, which I imagine is a nod to the Rainbow Jersey awarded each year at the UCI Road Racing World Championships. Merckx was so-named in 1967, 1971 and 1974, and his likeness later came to be associated with said color-scheme as a result…
Compare with the source material:
2. We’ve discussed the so-called Jet Set motif in this space before, of which the following shirt is a solid example.
3. THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND…
4. Wheels of steel…
5. Checkered flags FTW!
Below, I’ve embedded a classic clip from A Sunday in Hell — acclaimed by some as the finest sports documentary of its kind — which chronicles the 1976 race from various perspectives, including that of participants (Merckx amongst them), organizers, team officials, spectators and so forth. Pretty compelling stuff…
